We teach Taekwon-Do throughout Wellington

Taekwon-Do is a martial art suitable for all ages. As well as teaching a range of self-defence skills, training in Taekwon-Do provides numerous other benefits. These range from building a stronger and more coordinated body, learning goal attainment and perseverance, developing self-confidence and mental strength, and imparting a natural understanding of etiquette.

If you are interested in Taekwon-Do for yourself or your children, we have special classes specifically designed for beginners. These introduce you to Taekwon-Do in a gentle and non-threatening way. Contact us now to find out about the next beginners class

About Spirit Taekwon-Do

Spirit Taekwon-Do started life as Brooklyn Taekwon-Do Club, which was opened by the current Head Instructor, Mr Brett Kraiger, in 1995, and is still operating today as Spirit Taekwon-Do Brooklyn. In more recent times senior black belts from Brooklyn opened a number of schools around Wellington. Rather than separating out into completely independent clubs we realised that we would be able to achieve much more together as one cohesive group.

We currently have classes operating in Vogelmorn, Kelburn, Karori, Thorndon and Newlands, training five different days a week. Click here to find out more about our schools, training times and instructors.

If you are brand new to martial arts you will find that our beginners classes are the ideal introduction to Taekwon-Do.

All of Spirit's instructors are black belts, first-aid qualified and certified as instructors by the International Taekwon-Do Foundation of New Zealand. They also have regular instructor training.

Why Taekwon-Do?

"The ultimate purpose of Taekwon-Do is to eliminate fighting by discouraging the stronger’s oppression of the weaker with a power that is based on humanity, justice, morality, wisdom and faith, thereby helping to build a better and more peaceful world."

Taekwon-Do is many different things to many people.

Whether you are wanting to get fit, learn a martial art, learn self defence, or to have a new challenge and a bit of fun, you will find what you are looking for in Taekwon-Do.

Taekwon-Do is suitable for all ages, and often you will find entire families training together. Children under 10 have gained black belts in Taekwon-Do, as have people in their 70s.

Taekwon-Do, like most martial arts, has a very strong moral culture, infused into the art by the founder, General Choi Hong Hi. While learning how to apply strikes, punches, kicks and blocks in self defence, the student will also be learning the tenets of Taekwon-Do. Through the discipline of martial arts training over a period of time the student will develop a strong morality and high self esteem. This is particularly important for children, who can learn many important life skills through training in Taekwon-Do.

What Our People Say

Taekwon-Do has given me a new lease of life (after being told I would never bend my knee again! lol) and provided a father-son bonding which means so much to me as a parent. Also the tenets are great ways to live, being applicable to every aspect of life.
